FAQs

USA Visa Questions Answered

Got a specific question about the US visa process? We're here to help — no jargon, just clear answers.

Ask on WhatsApp
Do UK citizens need a US visa?
Most UK citizens can travel to the USA under the Visa Waiver Programme (VWP) using an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorisation) for trips up to 90 days for tourism or business. An ESTA is not a visa. If you plan to study, work, or stay longer than 90 days, you will need the appropriate visa. We confirm the correct route for your specific situation.
How long does a US visitor visa (B-2) take to process?
Processing time includes waiting for an interview appointment at the US Embassy in London, plus a further 5–10 business days for the visa to be processed and returned after your interview. Interview wait times fluctuate with demand — we recommend applying at least 3 months before your intended travel date.
What happens at the US visa interview?
The consular officer will ask questions about the purpose of your visit, your ties to the UK, your finances, and your travel history. The interview is typically short (5–10 minutes). Our interview coaching sessions prepare you for common questions and help you present your case clearly and confidently.
My US visa was refused. Can I reapply?
Yes. A refusal does not permanently bar you from applying again. We review your refusal notice, identify the grounds for refusal (often section 214(b) — failure to demonstrate non-immigrant intent), and rebuild your application addressing those specific concerns directly.
Can I work in the USA on a student visa?
F-1 students are permitted to work on-campus up to 20 hours per week during term time. Off-campus work requires authorisation through CPT (Curricular Practical Training) or OPT (Optional Practical Training) after your first academic year. We advise on the full range of work rights available to you as a student.
What is ESTA and do I need it?
ESTA is an authorisation (not a visa) for eligible citizens of Visa Waiver Programme countries — including the UK — to travel to the USA for up to 90 days for tourism or business. It is applied for online and is usually approved within 72 hours. We advise you on whether ESTA is appropriate for your trip or whether a full visa is required.
